Rylan has two options: life in a mental institution, or death in the real world. He opts for potential death to go on a quest for answers.

A praesidian’s role is simple: raise and protect your assigned child. No one mentions the devasting syndrome that results if you lose your charge. It goes beyond soul-crushing grief, haunting guilt, and no sense of identity. Rylan experiences skull-piercing migraines, odd bouts of mutism, and frequent convulsions as his neuro-programming unravels.

Society sees him as an aberration created by the elite, yet Rylan finds an unlikely ally in a combative, streetwise orphan who knows how to game the system. But just as he gets a grip on his mental state, his physical symptoms escalate to an alarming level. He must find the one praesidian who survived his condition before the illness overtakes him.
