Praesidians are neurologically modified guardians, bonded to the children of the elite through a procedure that rewrites their identities. If those children die, the praesidians rarely survive. Most choose death over the agony.
Rylan refuses that fate. Institutionalized and deteriorating, he learns of Dana Syvertsen—the only one known to have survived. Desperate, he flees to find her, only to discover the world beyond his gilded cage is impossible to navigate alone.
Then he meets Kirsi: a thirteen-year-old orphan, street-smart and ferocious, everything his charge was not. She commandeers his failing quest, forcing him to confront the brutal truth of what was done to him.
